Spring Prepping - Getting Your Camper Ready

As winter fades and the days start to stretch, spring is the perfect time to give your campervan a little attention before the season really kicks off. You don’t need a full overhaul or major upgrades - a few simple checks and jobs now can make the months ahead far more enjoyable.
Spring prepping is about resetting the van after winter use or storage and making sure everything is ready for lighter evenings, spontaneous trips, and longer days on the road.
Air It Out and Let the Van Breathe
After winter, the first job is always ventilation. Open the doors, windows, and cupboards and let fresh air circulate through the van.
This helps clear out any stale air, reduces lingering damp smells, and gives you a chance to spot any condensation issues early. Even a short airing makes the van feel instantly fresher and more inviting.
Give the Interior a Proper Clean
Spring is a great time for a deeper clean than you might manage during winter trips.
Focus on:
Wiping down hard surfaces and cupboards
Hoovering seats, floors, and mattress areas
Washing cushion covers, throws, and blankets
Cleaning windows and mirrors
Removing winter grit, salt, and mud now keeps the van in much better condition as the season goes on.
Check Soft Furnishings and Bedding
Winter trips often mean heavier bedding, extra blankets, and thicker throws. As temperatures rise, swap these out for lighter options.
It’s also a good time to check cushions and mattresses for any signs of damp. Letting everything air fully and dry properly helps prevent musty smells and keeps sleeping areas comfortable.
Inspect the Water System
If your water system was drained or used less over winter, spring is the time to check it thoroughly.
Run fresh water through the system, check taps and connections, and make sure the pump sounds healthy. It’s also a good idea to clean the fresh water tank and flush the system before your first longer trip of the year.
Do a Quick Electrical Check
You don’t need to be an expert, but a basic check goes a long way.
Turn everything on and make sure:
Lights are working
USB sockets and plugs are live
Fridge powers up correctly
Battery levels look healthy
Catching small issues now avoids frustration when you’re parked up somewhere beautiful later on.
Refresh Your Storage and Packing Setup
Spring trips often mean different gear to winter ones.
Take a few minutes to:
Remove items you no longer need
Restock essentials like cleaning cloths and bin liners
Reorganise cupboards so frequently used items are easy to reach
A tidy van makes trips more relaxed and cuts down on unnecessary clutter.
Check the Outside Too
Winter weather can be tough on exteriors.
Give the van a quick walk-around:
Check tyres and tyre pressures
Clean door seals and hinges
Inspect roof vents or accessories
Wash off winter grime from the bodywork
These small checks help keep everything working smoothly as travel picks up.
Get Back Into the Camper Mindset
Spring prepping isn’t just practical - it’s mental too.
Spending time cleaning, checking, and reorganising gets you back into camper mode. It reminds you why you love travelling this way and makes those first spring trips feel even more exciting.
